Qualifications to Teach GIS and Planning
 


Good Teaching and Communications skills

  • At American University I worked with their Center for Teaching Excellence to establish graduate and faculty-level GIS seminars, setup an ArcIMS server for campus data, and participated in ESRI's EdUC

  • In my role as Adjunct Researcher-in-Residence at American University co-hosted the organization of a "Mapping the News" for  Time, Newsweek etc journalists on rapid publishing of maps & aerial photos.

  • From 1983-1985 I was a former Senior Lecturer in Process Analysis, Economics and Design at the University of Auckland, with 48 junior and senior age university students in each class.

  • I led Foxhall Community Citizens Association in Washington DC, chaired often contentious meetings wrote a weekly column in "Georgetown Current", and designed plus maintained www.foxhall.org

  • I've authored a number of publications ranging from articles for professional societies, presentations at international conferences, research publications, talks to groups, and testimony before elected officials (see "Issues" pull-down menu at www.foxhall.org)

Experience With GIS Tools and Data ( see www.BobAndrew.info/GIS.htm )

  •  At CSC Corp & DynCorp before that, I was their ESRI Corporate Business Partner and developed the design of a Geospatial Center of Excellence to support federal agencies such as EPA, USDA, USFS and DOI.

  • In my role as  Casey Trees Logistics Manager, developed and printed press materials and handouts for a summer 2002  presentation of our 100,000+ DC "street tree" inventory. I continue to advise on their citizen forester program and open spaces project, including collaborative software tools to keep diverse stakeholders engaged and informed.

  • As System Architect for US DOJ Civil Rights, oversaw the upgrade of a 10-year old system to provide desktop GIS analysis of redistricting based on Census 2000 data, using ArcGIS 8.12 and Oracle 8.

  • While at ICF Consulting as a Team Leader, I worked closely with the Marketing, Media and Public Information Services through their GSA schedule to tightly integrate our GIS services with their computer-graphics offerings

  • I  supported 4H and their GIS Technology Teams, and helped USDA's Tom Tate set up CyberSeniors/CyberTeens

Experience with Environmental and Neighborhood Planning ( see www.BobAndrew.info/civic.htm )

  • As President of Foxhall Community Citizens Association I successfully testified on Environmental Impact Statements for a FHWA project involving a major new entrance into Georgetown University, also an NPS project involving a Land Exchange for a new private school, plus Public Utility Commission and the Board of Zoning Adjustment for variances.

  • I served five years on DC Federation of Citizens Associations, responsible for coordinating our common position each month on issues affecting economically and racially diverse neighborhoods, for written testimony and position papers;

  • I wrote a weekly column on local resident issues from 1999-2002 for "Georgetown Current" plus a monthly newsletter.

  • As  Transportation member of the "Committee of 100", I worked with DC Dept. of Transportation and Sierra Club to get discreet advertiser-supported bus shelters with maps, lights, real-time arrivals.

  • As Board Member of DC Federation of Citizen Associations, I worked with DC Office of Planning to redesign neighborhood planning and budgeting, and redesign the Comprehensive Planning process.

  • As Yardley Borough Planning Commissioner in the early 1990's, I worked with seniors to develop two managed residences, one for self-sufficient &mobile, the other those needing visiting nurse/meals.

Degree

  • I possess an honors degree in Chemical and Materials Engineering from the University of Auckland, plus two years towards a Ph.D. on "Expert Systems in Steelmaking" plus three years full-time teaching and three years of adjunct research: spelled in more detail on the accompanying cover letter.
