Subject: Application for Vacancy Pool

Accompanying this letter are five letters of reference, who testify to my planning role with campus plans, city-wide comprehensive plans and effective planning interaction at the neighborhood level.

I have also included contact information for two former academic colleagues. They can personally testify to my role as Adjunct Researcher-in-Residence at the American University 2002-2004, and as Senior Lecturer of Process Analysis, Economics and Design at University of Auckland, 1983-1985.

Academically, I have an honours degree in Chemical & Materials Engineering, plus two years towards  Ph.D. in "Expert Systems for Steelmaking", interrupted by family problems at the time. Ten years later I was invited to return to Auckland from the U.S. in direct response to the Iran-Iraq war, and filled an urgent vacancy mid-year as a Senior Lecturer for three years. During that time I worked on Curriculum redesign from year-long to semestral, personally adding the interdisciplinary component in second year so engineers would be cognizant of the impact of their designs on society.

The attached documentation shows I have the planning and GIS experience to teach both these courses.

  • ESTU 369 course would be delivered using established curriculum materials:
For that course I'll filling for a person who had stepped down at the last minute.

  • EGOE 453 course proposing "Bellingham Waterfront History through Maps"
Synthesize historical drawings and photos of building and shoreline changes.

Unlike many GIS professionals who have only done natural resources GIS, as the System Architect for USDOJ Civil Rights in upgrading Redistricting tools for Census 2000 I also have a strong background
with demographic GIS. Also my work as Logistics Manager for  Casey Trees foundation Tree Map and DC Department of Transportation for smart bus shelters with Sierra Club speak to my experience in the vital area of multi-modal transportation planning in an ISTEA-21 & TEA-21 federal funds environment.

One of my recent projects - managing the technology upgrade of videoconferencing and satellite data feeds to the EPA Emergency Operations Center - is an indicator of the responsibilities that taxpayers have entrusted me with for emergencies. From that role, I know how to access the key data needed to support emergency managers, including how to get access to sensitive business information as needed.

The very reason I moved here was driven by weather-impacts on the refining industry: Rita and Katrina Hurricanes made refineries in this county get close consideration from their owners as being a strategic alternate to Middle East/Venezuelan crudes through the Gulf Coast: use Canadian crudes instead.

Attached to this letter are the following required documents in support of my application:

1) Summary of specific qualifications for these two roles

2) Completed Resume, featuring University experiences

3) References: 5 letters & links to 2 academic colleagues
