In Your Neighborhood - Foxhall: November 3, 1999
Having Halloween fall on a weekend gave Foxhall kids added opportunity to get in
costume. The annual FCCA parade and costume contest starting with assembling at Q St
circle at Surrey Lane. Record numbers of kids, parents and grandparents turned up! Parade
marshal Karla Daly with a tin whistle herded us across Foxhall to Hardy
Rec Center, ably assisted by Joe Boyd Goodman and Henry
Lee sporting raised umbrellas, safely guarding our road crossings like sheep
dogs.
Vickie Crooke had prepared spiced apple juice, trays of
vegetable nibbles, cookies and pretzels. Vickie also worked with Diane Abshire
and Rec Center staffer Enrique to ensure the Rec Center and grounds were
ghoulishly adorned. Center Director Ireatha Robinson brought her many
years of experience to bear in planning the most popular event of the afternoon - pumpkin
decorating. Debbie Butterworth oversaw a sea of bodies clustered around
picnic tables, where they layered paint, glue, glitter, feathers, pipe cleaners and
buttons to "personalize" a pumpkin to take home.
Finally, the costume judges who had been
circulating in the crowd declared their collective judgement - so hard with so many categories!

Every one then went home, or got together in family groups to
"trick-or-treat", but all agreed it was the best Halloween get-together in
recent memory. To top this for next year, we're already thinking of getting some brass
musicians for the parade!
