Neighborhood Notes - Foxhall: 3 May, 2000The renewing vigor of Spring is showing up all over the Foxhall neighborhood. DPW has replanted in their correct locations and species many old trees they removed last year, a major improvement over all previous administration’s efforts when stumps were not removed. DCRP finally sound like they are ready to dust off and implement plans to refurbish the Hardy Rec. Center basketball court, fences, softball diamond, backstop and playing fields. DC Heritage Tourism Coalition are now calling for prototype designs with their call box project, envisioning myriad interpretations of a community’s history to be located in the space where the phone was once located – for example, quotations, memories, poems, or montage: all historically accurate, interesting and relating to the political, social, cultural or architectural heritage of the neighborhood National Park Service are willing to work with the city and neighbors to complete cleanup within Glover-Archbold Park. We have long had safety concerns about the Foundry Branch tunnel under Canal Rd, complicated by multiple jurisdictions between DPW, Rock Creek Park and C&O Canal managements. There is optimism that completion of the sewer repair project will have stopped the small but steady sewage leak into the tunnel. Volunteers will be needed to eliminate bamboo grove homeless shelters, but this cannot be done without scheduling professional disposal by NPS. Such organized cleanups would be great opportunities for “Keep America Beautiful” as well as removal of vegetation that is under DPW jurisdiction on the ramp down to the tunnel. © Bob Andrew, Foxhall |
