Professional & Family Life of Bob ANDREW: now in United Arab Emirates

Neighborhood Notes - Foxhall: 31 October 2001

What a great weekend we just had! The Foxhall and Palisades neighborhoods were alive with groups getting together to celebrate life. Saturday afternoon we held our annual Halloween costume parade and pumpkin decorating party at Hardy Rec. Center, with every kid (over 50 of them) getting an individual creative category certificate.

Sunday afternoon the firefighters at Engine 29 culminated a day-long cooking marathon to serve hundreds of neighbors, to the sound of a great-sounding live band, drawn from the FEMS ranks. Every family bought a side dish or desert, so there was plenty for everyone, washed down with apple juice and cookies.

On a more serious note, relations between GU and BZA over the GU Campus Plan 2000 have worsened with a count-down between the BZA’s “Order on Reconsideration” of August 6th and GU’s filing with the DC Court of Appeals. Although neighborhood associations already protected their legal rights by also filing as interveners, whatever happened to GU complying with the order already issued? Under that timeline, GU had ninety days to prepare revisions to comply with this order, which would make them due in the first week of November. At this stage, it is simply not clear if GU will honor the order, ignore it, fight just a handful of conditions in the order, or will attempt to have the entire plan overturned.

Some student groups, not included as they should have been by GU in development of campus plans are now raising concerns about ‘student rights’, but with no specific past grievances to air. It is unfortunate that the BZA felt it necessary, based on evidence presented, to require of GU to demonstrate that it is enforcing its own Student 'Code of Conduct'.
