Professional & Family Life of Bob ANDREW: now in United Arab Emirates

Neighborhood Notes - Foxhall: 30 August, 2000

Listed this week is a comprehensive recap of recommendations from community organizations to the BZA on GU Campus Plan regarding student behavior and interim off-campus housing recommendations.

GU’s Off-campus Student Affairs office should be enhanced and stabilized with multi-year funding guarantee.

Enhanced off-campus behavior control should include:

(a) Off-campus parties in non-university-owned housing should be registered.

(b) Notify parents when students are arrested off-campus or issued a noise violation by MPD.

(c) Juniors who prove not to be good citizens should return to campus for their senior year.

(d) Disproportionately problematic Varsity athletic teams should be required to live on campus.

(e) Students living off campus must register by a date certain and maintain records of good conduct.

(f) GU must recognize campus community alcohol problems exist not adequately addressed by current efforts.

(h) Hotline should be extended to Thursday nights, and follow-up with those who called to advise actions taken.

Until all undergraduate students can be housed, GU should adopt the following steps to decrease objectionable conditions in the community:

(a) Assure housing in which their students live meets DCRA and other safety codes; no illegal apartments listed in the “off-campus housing” advice or GU website.

(b) Join with the community to promote city inspection of group homes.

(c) Minimize twice-yearly impact of vehicles involved moving students into and out of off-campus housing.

(d) Educate students effectively on city services, including trash, safety codes, etc.
