Neighborhood Notes - Foxhall: 23 August, 2000
Listed
this week is a comprehensive recap of recommendations from community
organizations to the BZA on GU Campus Plan regarding
length of campus plan
and
enrollment.
(Next week will cover student behavior and interim off-campus
housing, the
following week MedStar and traffic recommendations).
No more than a five year
plan approval, until Southwest Quadrangle is operational and its impacts can be
measured. Changes proposed for north campus similarly need careful assessment
with very different operations under MedStar. A new GU President takes the helm
next year and a new VP for Student Affairs has just joined their administration.
·
Student
categories regularized, carefully charted over time to avoid “apples and
oranges” comparisons.
·
Land use
categories expanded to provide to BZA and the community adequate information.
·
Objective
measures adopted as part of the final BZA order.
·
Create indices
such as summonses, police citations, arrests, documented violations, DPW
citations, DCRA citations, traffic data to measure impacts on the community.
·
Identify nearby
off-campus university facilities with usage, and objectionable impacts assessed.
·
Make available
information required to verify Facility-Area Ratio calculations
·
New main campus
facilities be limited to use for student productions, games, and activities, and
not rented for public events, concerts etc.
·
Quarterly
meeting process continue, open to press and community.
·
Undergraduate students capped at
its present limit, 111 students above current enrollment.
·
Graduate
enrollment limited to 200 additional students, consistent with detailed plans
proffered by GU.
In the interim, all parties can utilize objective
standards to see whether campus-life enhancements planned by GU are working to
limit impacts of students on community residential life. We can learn how
committed the new President and VP for Student Affairs are, and how policies and
programs they adopt are working.
