Neighborhood Notes - Foxhall: 27 February 2002
Kudos to DDOT / FHWA for making good progress on rebuilding a
short stretch of MacArthur Boulevard from Foxhall to Laverock, by Georgetown Day
School. The new granite curbs and sidewalks are now mostly in place, save for a
few pedestrian crossings, then there will be a gap of several months until it is
warm enough to repave the street.
However, there has been surprising silence from DDOT on what their plans are for
the extra money from the new $2 million congressional windfall for the turn lane
and traffic light at the relocated Field School on
upper Foxhall Rd, well in excess of the published cost of that project. Don
Tangherlini has spoken in general terms about improving safety all up and down
Foxhall Rd, but where are the specifics?
Will housemaids be able to safely walk from the D-6 bus stop on Reservoir up to
mansions on upper sections of Foxhall Rd without taking their lives in their
hands by walking in the streets? What about school students taking public
transport, who also want to walk on the east side of upper Foxhall Rd to Field
School, to maintain that school's stated commitment to public access?
Will the congested intersection at Reservoir Rd and Foxhall Rd get redesigned
and rebuilt, as was requested in the current DMJM+Harris
study of the major Palisades corridors? We're all looking
forward to DDOT having a spokesman come to a future FCCA monthly meeting and
providing clarity, as well as having DMV streamline the parking sticker
transition from Ward to Ward 3.
