Professional & Family Life of Bob ANDREW: now in United Arab Emirates

Neighborhood Notes - Foxhall: 19 December 2001

This week our local FEMS Engine Company #29 will serve with honor in a new and different way. At 11:10 am on Friday 21 Phil Buffa will carry the Olympic Torch from Arlington County Court House on Day 18 of the relay. Although Phil will be in one of the more public legs of the relay, he would have been glad to run WAY OUT in the desert where there might be no spectators, just to run in honor of the 353 men and women of FDNY who lost their lives at World Trade Center.

Foxhall Community Citizens Association women are organizing this month to provide a dinner at Engine 29 for each shift, to thank them for being there for us September 11, and every day. Whatever problems there might be with the new chief who is under questioning for bringing in former co-workers into FEMS management (rather than open search or promotion from within in), Engine Company 29 really feel right here is where they are called to serve. This is all the more remarkable because almost none of these public servants can easily afford to live in our neighborhood.

The same pride in this area applies to staff working at our Recreation Center. We just learned that DC Parks & Recreation plan to transfer Hardy Rec. Center supervisor Ireatha Robinson to a housing project center in South-west DC, without any discussion. This certainly does not sound like a promotion, and we can testify to her quiet, cheerful, steadfast attention to her duties at Hardy. DCPR has agreed to delay her transfer until after these holidays (it was due to happen this week) and is sending manager Art Dockery to FCCA’s December meeting to explain why, and who will be replacing her.
