Professional & Family Life of Bob ANDREW: now in United Arab Emirates

Neighborhood Notes - Foxhall: 17 May, 2000

Kudos to C&O Canal staff for following through! This week Deputy Superintendent Kevin Brandt met with local Landscape Architect Kent Slowinski and me on NPS efforts to improve security of the Foundry Branch tunnel. On Wednesday May 17 a large volunteer group from Marriott Corporation will clear all small growth on the path from Canal Rd down to the tunnel. Later on their contractors will remove the larger trees growing directly over the tunnel headwall whose roots over time could cause structural damage. This will also open up the overhanging canopy.

NPS are also trying to find vandal-proof screens to put over the light fixtures in the tunnel, and (if Rock Creek Park staff will agree) to add lighting up on the headwall itself. They are also looking for local residents who regularly ride bicycles along the canal towpath or Capital Crescent Trail to consider becoming official volunteers for C&O Canal, equipped with cell phones to call Park Police if they observe any trouble. Individuals who want to volunteer for that, or any groups/schools that wish to volunteer to do a cleanup, just call Nancy Brown at (301) 739-4200.

Also this Wednesday come to the Foxhall Community May meeting, 7:30 pm at Hardy Rec. Center. We will cover the process for GU Campus Plan mediation representation, but equally important lots of exciting news about many new projects at Hardy. Come and hear about the new Tot Lot and Kids Lot equipment now being installed, “Hardy Playground Pals” fund-raising for improvements, refurbishing the basketball court, and upgrades to softball/soccer fields. In addition to projects, learn about the Antique Road Show to be held May 21, summer Sundial for pre-school and Urban Summer Camp for elementary age kids.
