Professional & Family Life of Bob ANDREW: now in United Arab Emirates

Neighhborhood Notes - Foxhall: 12 April, 2000

Having already torn up Georgetown streets to bury their fiber optic conduits of e-commerce, even with a city -wide moratorium in place, tell-tale spray paint markings are now appearing on the Canal Road sidewalk. This company is identified only by PTL, which is unlikely to be the common evangelistic abbreviation in the shadow of a prestigious Roman Catholic university!

Given that FHWA are in the final throes of designing a new interchange on Canal Rd, is it possible that any conduit that they will need to install to synchronize all traffic lights along this stretch will not be installed at the same time as this PTL does their work? You might ask how could two groups working on the same stretch not be coordinated, but this happened once already. Only early last year WASA was about to start a sewer main replacement project across Canal Rd at the intersection with Glover-Archbold Park, until locals pointed out that FHWA was in the midst of the stone-wall reconstruction project which had Canal Rd down to a single lane. WASA then delayed their work to keep traffic disruption to a minimum, and have now completed all work, plus restoring a traffic island at Foxhall & Canal.

As much noise as DPW and the Mayor have made about utility and telecommunications companies needing to synchronize placing their conduits in the same trench, we've seen no details on buried conduit the city itself will need to install to implement a new central traffic control center. This is already approved by NCPC and budgeted, but does the city have the technical staff to implement it?
