Neighborhood Notes - Foxhall: 10 May, 2000C&O Canal National Historical Park are increasing efforts to establish a sustainable “Park Watch / Leave no Trace” program in our area. Georgetown BID made a great start by having their contractor remove all existing graffiti with high-pressure soda water. Motion detectors and cameras are being installed around the Canal Boat to discourage arson and vandalism. To improve security for people, the park will be installing three call boxes along the Capital Crescent Trail between K St and Arizona Avenue bridge. They also seek to work with adjacent property owners to install towpath security lighting in urban stretches within Georgetown. As part of the Canal Rd GU entrance project, DPW’s John Payne has explored relocating the median street lights up on the canal wall, which would also improve lighting for the towpath in the stretch between Whitehurst Freeway and Glover-Archbold Park. Foxhall community is also seeing removal of vegetation on the ramp down to the tunnel, as well as lighting on the wall facing the ramp. C&O Partnership and Volunteer Coordinator Nancy Brown is looking to expand their Bike Patrol to encourage safer riding practices, and to encourage dog owners to use new “doggie bag” dispensers that will soon be located all along the towpath. New signage will inform towpath users of appropriate behavior and low impact practices, plus provide direct phone number to US Park Police. If wondering about the absence of trash containers, they were not vandalized - there are deliberately none along the towpath. Park Service wants you to carry out anything you bring. © Bob Andrew, Foxhall |
