Project Manager for GENIE, the Global EHS Network Information Enabler project, a 1996/1997 SRP-initiated project. "GENIE" provides single icon access to all production Mobil EHS Notes databases, and a consistent GUI interface for all new applications - this behaves identically with a browser client or Notes client.
Major 1996 databases for GENIE were Issues Management and EHS Management System, for 1997 projects in EHS Best Practices, Crisis Management, Risk Management, Incident & Injury, Management of Change and Manuals Admin / Publishing / Update / Distribution.
Member of Document Management Strategy Team evaluation of 10 vendors, culminating in a world-wide five-day short-listing forced-ranking process. Helped facilitate a lateral-thought approach to avoid "one-size-must-fit-all", with agreement on final selection of two vendors: CADD-centric with audit trail, and Text-centric with single checkout/in.
November Update: With 32-bit SME 2.0, Domino.Doc is being re-evaluated as low-cost alternative for more flexible document management.
Right after Mobil's SRP Staff Redesign Project, built EHS Contact Database in Lotus Notes from staff selection lists- used first just as an information tool display staff lists by group or location. Evolved it as both GIS tool to plan SME rollout and EHS management tool to track facilities costs (for co-located staff), I.S. costs (desktop/laptop), and generate dynamic e-mail lists.
EHS Contact List stores the user e-mail address in the user profile form. GENIE designers built a mail list tool from the defined views, which any user can save into their personal Notes Mail address book. Now, since mail lists can be generated at any time from the database, staff group or location changes only have to be maintained in one place.
November Update: Plans to add skills/competency and experience history
Founding member of the Mobil Knowledge Management Business Advisory Council. This includes GIS Information Access consultants plus the project reps from major initiatives Mobil Knowledge Exchange (MEPUS), Mobil Technology (MTC), BestNet (M&R) and GENIE (EHS) as well as interested and affected specialists e.g. Librarians, Publications, Procurement etc.
Arranged late 1996 for M&R to use Lotus Notes designers coming off GENIE project to work on their Best Practices project. This saved many man-months, enabled architectural consistency in Notes and "Web" rendering of BestNet and GENIE. Took part in pilot workshops, key design decisions, setup EHS pilot in "Service Station Safety Performance".
November Update: Worked with Ed Hauswald of EHS Manufacturing Best Practices Leadership to deploy networks in Risk Management, Incident & Injury, Cost Optimization, Industrial Hygiene and Product Stewardship.
MTC and MEPTEC used the BestNet design as a basis for developing a more flexible yet secure MobilShare alternate to Internet NewsGroups. Now plan to bring MobilShare into EHS to manage project libraries and committee processes. It requires only keyword and icon selection with functionality options by a business owner, rather than needing any custom programming changes. "MobilShare" provides four templates with choices among Discussion, Library, News-Events and/or Best Practices.
Mobil Europe Lubricants inherited a Notes-based Global Lubricants Information System from BP. I have worked with GLIS Project Manager Chris Bullen and BP Notes Administrator Flake Wright to setup replication via firewall, import Mobil Safety Data and helped architect plans to import master formulations from MRCTEC. When master formulation update complete year-end 1997, there is regional interest (NA M&R, Asia/Pacific) using GLIS in other Mobil regions.
As part of SME plans to replace a non-integrated, DOS-based suite of disparate tools for Mobil's Crisis Center, evaluated Notes-based systems at BP in London and Amoco in Chicago. Reached agreement with Amoco to obtain their proven Notes 3.3 functionality at no cost, and upgrade it to Notes/Domino 4.5 for common use by both companies.
Worked with Corporate Media Relations and Web Team on plans to integrate information from this Notes database for media updates in the event of a crisis, possibly with an external Domino server. Currently Media Relations have an Emergency set of pages used during an Exercise.
November Update: Work with SEA on specs for export from the RIMS on-site system directly as HTML for Web Site.
Piloted training material from the Notes Mail project with Fairfax SME installers, facilitated orientation for IBM Catapult trainers in legacy mail OFFIS, HP OpenMail and cc:Mail, and developed specific cc:Mail migration/housekeeping tips.
November Update: Provided similar input into the additional functionality for C&S in Notes 4.52. In addition cooperated with IBM training to get "NBT for Notes Mail" layered in lieu of "CBT for Notes".
With Issues Management implemented mail notification of team members. Design handles a mix of Notes and Internet mail address types, provides self-registration of non-team members while keeping workflow rights to managed lists.
Secured EHS commitment to common web calendar for group meetings, participation in Notes 4.5 C & S pilot rollout.
November Update: Worked with MTC and Brian Mumey to pilot a meetings utility built on Notes 4.52 C&S tools
Providing Fairfax input into Dallas pilot to migrate "MEPNEWS" and "TECNEWS" to a Domino-hosted service called MobilNews, with a view to migrating completely off cc:Mail Bulletin Boards. Recommended increased functionality beyond simple migration to e.g. use external links for Mobil Press Releases to comply with SEC rules, using sections for long structured mass mail items such as Job Requisitions.
November Update: Providing feedback on design and operation of mail-server based NewsBoards.
Responsible for building and managing the EHS Index accessible from the Launch! site. With layout modeled after Mobil GIS Link, this compact home page illustrates co-existence of simple HTML links, Domino-rendered databases and System Knowhow repository. Updated with "What's New", management initiatives, and useful URL links for EHS.
Consulted with EHS Corporate Center and Web Team on an HTML implementation of their first EHS Performance Report 1996, "Meeting Our Commitments". Provided EHS-CC with specific advice for future design for "on-line" first, then generate hard-copy from it; rather than current "reverse engineering" approach from traditional graphics design. Emphasized global importance of designing for A4, not just 8 1/2 by 11 inch.
EHS subscription use is mainly regulatory proposals, monitoring, analysis and news. Costs were over $0.25 million p.a. pre-SRP, mainly in separate hard-copy or individual CD-ROM subscriptions. We reduced cost over 40%, switched users on LAN to using CD-ROM from a SME tower, non-LAN users to Internet access secured by password. Beta-test work with vendors to improve performance and functionality of Internet versions to approach that of Notes.
As Mobil member on an API Air Toxics committee with EPA, I worked with EPA Technology Tranfer Network and major environmental activist groups to put in place an Internet-enabled Bulletin Board process that provided draft minutes to committee members for review. Once agreed, these minutes are posted (with upcoming calendar and agenda) for public access.
The various chairs of the Mobil Internet/Intranet Strategy Team invited me, upon occasion, to join in with their A&S Architecture & Standards activity and provide input, specifically on appropriate application of Domino services.
November Update: Worked with individual members of a proposed Enterprise Technologies group to provide input to their common process
With our EHS web site, have consistently followed standards established by the web team. Our current site is based on the GIS Link design. With the CUE Comon User Environment about to be adopted, invested in and SME 2.0 workstation and admin staff in Fairfax and Dallas are signed up for classes with the Web Team on M/S Front Page 97 and CUE.
For Mobil EHS Inc and KOGAS Safety project, I pioneered a site on the new DALLND6 extranet Domino server, providing secure access to a "MobilShare"-based common library between customer, contractor (Radian) and Mobil. Sigificant interest has been expressed by Capital Project groups in applying this approach along with BestNet to new major Mobil projects like the Jurong Ethylene Cracker in Singapore
In early-mid 90's was an active participant at API on technical R&D comittees working with EPA and States for uniform data structure for Emissions Inventory Improvement Program. I'm a member of PIDX Petroleum Industry Data Exchange on EDI standards for common Environmental reports - waste shipments, waste discharges, air emissions.
As part of GENIE and BestNet deployment to Europe and PacRim, identified communication bottlenecks (e.g. bandwidth to Australia dominated by SAP/R2 traffic with Dallas) that have resulted in local affiliate decison to limit Intranet users. These are candidates for mirror Internet and/or replica Domino servers to provide adequate response time to local users.
For Notes Applications, for common support reasons replica server locations should be the same cities that are Mail server hubs - Dallas, London, Melbourne, Singapore and Tokyo.
Worked with Global E&D's Jack Powell on planning for router implementations for e.g. small M&R sites, in order to deploy SME to EHS staff based in field locations. With Rob Esser, integrated export spreadsheet file from EHS Contact List to be the LAN/dial-in site planning tool for SME team.
For Mobil's Shiva "Remote Node" dial-in, I developed a ScreenCam movie of all of the options from the Visual Basic dialog that laptop users can access from a Notes database via Netscape, or replicate to their local drive before travelling.
November update: User contributions of problem identification to the new Remote Access troubleshooting database.
EHS work, by its nature, is mainly open to all. For example, Mobil's CEO encouraged us to work cooperatively within our industry on joint approachs with regulators (provided Mobil gets something out of it too) on the theory that a "rising tide floats all boats". However, some information still needs to be securely managed.
We cross-certified between Mobil and BP's firewall Notes application servers, for MEL and EHS to exchange GLIS composition and MACSIN material safety data. We have cross-certified for a Crisis Response database with Amoco.
See Joint Venture contacts for client representatives within Mobil EHS
One option for improved international access to www.internal.mobil.com Intranet servers is at minimum to have one mirror site in each Mobil region e.g. Singapore and London. These would also double as redundant alternate access sites in event of failure of Dallas intranet server.
In order to cut down IDD International Direct Dial costs, some Mobil international sites are not being continuously connected. Karachi have a small AIX mail server that only connects a few times per day, and London have developed an NT alternative (whose support model has yet to be proven). Management commitment to end-to-end management combined with flexibility of cost is needed to prevent splintering of Mobil's infrastructure support.
While overseas on GENIE and BestNet infrastructure deployment planning, I tested both AT&T Direct Access and CompuServe network for dial-in, as well as numbers built in to the Shiva dial-in. In NotesMail developed "collapsed section" quick view version of world-wide Compuserve dial-in numbers, without low baud rate phone numbers.
As of November 1997, LubesCo is defined as IP address 150.127.x.x. inside Mobil's firewall, the same range formerly assigned to Coryton. I am proposing a strategy of information access for Notes users in LubesCo who are on the BP "COE" environment that will work equally well for the FuelsCo not inside Mobil's firewall. This relies on news in Mobil being Notes-based, whether deployed via NotesMail NewsBoards or Domino web-links.
At N.Z. SynFuels I was Technical Applications Group Leader. Responsibility included Library, CADD, E-Mail and Process Systems. I architected the design of a VM-based daily/hourly process data from a mainframe SQL database. This provided users with a menu of stored process and lab queries, with graphical GDDM display options.
At MRDC, I headed up the design effort to port PROMIS architecture (as built for U.S. and Japan) to IRIS at Mobil's three European refineries. We architected to migrate the Oracle databases from Vax to RS/6000, kept Windows GUI front-end under OS/2, and optimised the middleware to handle high (>20,000 points per hour) transaction rate.
My first MRDC assignment was consolidating three competing MAPS (Mobil Assay Program Systems for crude oil lab assays): VAX-based APL from Paulsboro Research, PC-based APL from Central Research and VM-based from Engineering. I quickly determined the only solid and sustainable correlation activity was from PRL, shut down the other two systems, then worked with PRL to integrate the user-friendly GUI features from CRL into their sound database and property-estimation methods.
For Mobil EHS Inc we did a complete inventory of globally available EHS software for Pertamina. The Excel spreadsheet from this effort is still used today by GIS in working with e.g. Ras Laffan on EHS application software suite.
GENIE started out with existing Notes 3.3 databases from MNGI and MEPUS. I decided that we would be in sync. with the SME Notes 4.1 Client being used for e-mail, so all new work was done in Notes 4.1. By early 1997 A&S endorsed Domino for specific purposes, so I committed all GENIE design to being Domino-compliant, and included Netscape testing as part of application acceptance.
Having worked with GIS Groups G & K to setup a monthly Notes Developers meeting in Dallas, I used this network to get committed participation by other groups in Domino-compliant Notes design on Mobil Domino Services. Worked with Mobil GIS on UserId/Password conventions for secure Netscape access for consistency with Notes ACL.
While teaching Chemical Engineering Design at University of Auckland I was a Faculty rep to the campus-wide Five-Year Computing Plan for 15,000 students. In our ChE department, I set up instrumented control systems for process laboratories and set up a 6-workstation Computer-Aided Instruction lab for student CBT development.
An annual labor-intensive task for major facilities is filing reports to state and federal agencies on air emissions, waste outhauls and water discharges. Rob Esser and I piloted a number of commercially available EHS multi-media database and reporting systems with several Mobil U.S. refineries and Chemical Plants. Lack of reporting standards between EPA and States is one reason for this not being a mature market.
When MTC was formed from MRDC in 3Q95, with my former managements blessing I came to Fairfax and worked with EHS team on Information Enabling needs on the Staff Redesign Project. This resulted in appointment to my current EHS/IT Integration Consultant position for the GENIE project, with a seat at the quarterly EHS Leadership Meeting.
At Petromas Engineering Services in Houston, performed process simulation of crude oil refining and sized/rated equipment for process units.
Managed monthly billing contracts and library for design analysis on time-sharing systems for process, mechanical and structural design
Active participant with major engineering contractors and government departments in CADD standards for neutral IGES file format to remove dependency on proprietary vendor standards
At Forster-Morrell Engineering in Colorado Springs, developed microcomputer energy analysis software for on-site building and process energy conservation and management.
