AGENCIES
Find companies that specialise in placing
senior technical staff in the Middle East as they should have the most
current listings from companies that are looking, plus help you
understand the structure of compensation, including any housing and
vehicle allowance which many firms offer.
ATTESTATION
You should begin the "attestation"
process ASAP serious about making a move. This involves your
university degree which must be certified at the national level in the
country where your degree was awarded, and getting it attested to by the
UAE embassy in that same country. If you will be bringing your spouse
with you, then your wedding certificate also needs to be attested in the
country where you got married. Common-law relationships are not
recognized in UAE.
INTERVIEWS
If flown out here for an interview, you
may be asked to do a "company" medical including a stress test - this is
NOT the "government" medical you will later need to get residency should
you get the job: this is simply a quick screen to see if there any major
obvious health issues. This is important to employers because of their
obligations under UAE law for full medical insurance coverage.
COMPENSATION
Your basic salary may include a set bonus each year - perhaps for
tax reasons for US law (other countries do not have dual taxation).
UAE law requires employers to cover basic medical insurance. Your
employer may provide two levels of insurance, depending on your
professional level. Since you pay nothing towards it except small
deductable for doctor visits, you don't get to choose which package -
however there is a wide range of doctors, pharmacies and hospitals to
choose from.
The employer also has to provide
you with thirty calendar days of annual leave. This typically comes with
round-trip economy fare(s) back to the city that you and your spouse
were hired from.
If you are subject to U.S.
income tax, do NOT stay longer than 30 days, or you lose the ability to deduct the
first $93K from your taxable income. |
